The first appearance in the Colosseum, Maximus asks "any of you ever served in the army?" To which one of the men responds "I served with you at vindobona". This guy knew him all along and never said anything. Showing how much his men respected him.

Juba (fellow gladiator) calls out "Maximus!" while throwing him a sword. Maximus had never revealed his name at that point, he was only known as "Spaniard". Maximus only revealed his name to everyone after the fight when Commodus insisted on meeting him.
