After Dani wins the dance contest you can see her sisters face in the trees with the exhaust hose taped to her mouth.

Pelle's empathy-inducing story with Dani has a twisted double-meaning
The opening frame with the tapestry depicts the entire layout of the story.
You can see a picture of Dani on her parents' nightstand. The vase with flowers behind the portrait foreshadows Dani being crowned as May Queen later in the movie.
