As Mark Watney is returning with the radioactive isotope, he is listening to the song Hot Stuff. In a laboratory setting when something is radioactive, it is described as 'hot'.

The oxygen levels in the HAB can be seen on the screen (always around 21%, like it is on Earth). However, after the accidental explosion, the screen shows that about 3% of the oxygen was burned up.

When Watney's first attempt at making water through combustion ends in an explosion, we can see the oxygen levels drop to 17.82% from the normal 21% level to signify the depletion of oxygen due to the explosion.

The Mars missions were named "Ares", after the Greek god of war. Greek mythology heavily influenced Roman mythology, and the same god was called "Mars" by the Romans.

Sean Bean's character is named Mitch Henderson, likely a reference to Henderson's Relish which is produced in Sheffield where he was born.
