The volcano set in You Only Live Twice (1967) cost $1 million. ($7 million when adjusted for inflation). This was equal to the entire budget of the first Bond movie, Dr No (1962). It needed 711 tons of steel. 50 plasterers and 60 riggers worked day and night to bring it to life.
The ninja-stuntmen in the volcano sequence used rope covered with hose pipe to slide down efficiently. They squeezed on the rubber to slow their descent, using it like a handbrake. It was a 125 ft drop.
