When Elizabeth falls, you can hear Jack tell the two British soldiers "and they made me their chief." In the sequel, the heroes encounter a tribe of cannibals, Jack was made their chief.

When Commodore Norrington first meets Captain Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' (2003) and opens Jack's compass, it spins briefly before settling on Jack. This implies what Norrington wants most is to capture Jack Sparrow, which is sure to result in a promotion and advance his position.

When Norrington holds the compass, it points to Jack, indicating his deepest desire is his naval duties, specifically here in fighting pirates.
