: A song from Whiplash called 'When I Wake' by Justin Hurwitz plays in the cafe. Whiplash and La la land were both directed by Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz does the music in both films.

For a brief moment in La La Land, as Mia and Sebastian are walking through the studios, a billboard for a film called 'Guy and Madeline' is wheeled behind them. 'Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench' (2009) was Damien Chazelle's directorial debut.

Mia is never seen drinking alcohol because her aunt was an alcoholic who "lived in her liquor"

Mia starts off wearing primary colors (blue, yellow, red), in the middle during her relationship with Sebastian wears secondary colors (orange, purple, green), during the epilogue wears black, grey, and white, and in the "could have been" part is seen wearing secondary colors
