The opening shot is of identical copies of Angier's top hat in a glade, followed by a shot of caged canaries in Borden's workshop. Thus the film's central conflict is spelled out.
After he performs a trick with a vanishing bird, Borden first meets Sarah. Her nephew is afraid he's killed the bird in the cage, he asks, "But where's his brother?" This is an early clue to both Angier's final trick, and Borden's true identity.
